Your First Hoffblog Homework Assignment!

The Assignment, Due by 11:59pm Wednesday August 25, 2010
1) Choose your favorite historical person of all time (historical means they were somebody before you were born).
2) Think about why he or she is your favorite.
3) Find your favorite quote from that person (or at least attributed to him or her, even if he or she did not actually say it).
4) Follow these directions for full credit (10 points):
A. Go to the comment section for this post.
B. Give the person's name.
C. Explain why that person is your favorite historical figure . . . keep it clean!
D. Write that person's quote (put it in quotes!) . . . again with the keeping it clean!
E. Write your first name, last initial (only!), and your class period.
F. Use proper grammar, spelling, etc.
G. Make sure you go through the whole word verification process.
H. MOST IMPORTANTLY, MAKE SURE YOUR CHOICE IS UNIQUE . . . FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED!  Have a backup person just in case "great minds think alike."

I will be moderating comments on a daily basis . . . if your comment/choice does not get posted in a timely fashion, it means either you violated one of the directions above (so try again by fixing whichever letter direction you violated), or I'm in the hospital (not voluntarily), or I've moved on to that great history place in the sky (again, not voluntarily)!

My favorite historical figure is the engineer Nikola Telsa from the mid 19th century. He invented what is regarded as the basis of modern electricity in the alternating current, yet received virtually no accolades for this accomplishment during his lifetime. My favorite quote from Tesla is "Let the future tell the truth, and evaluate each one according to his work and his accomplishments. The present is theirs; the future, for which I have really worked, is mine".

Genghis Khan - Genghis Khan, the great Mongolian emperor, is my favorite historical figure. He united multiple nomadic tribes that had previously had unstable relationships with one another, and had conquered more land than any other ruler in history, over 14 million square miles. My favorite quote by Genghis Khan is “It is not sufficient that I suceed - all others must fail.”

Victor Hugo is my favorite historical figure. He was an amazing author in 1800s France. He wrote novels such as The Hunchback of Notre Dame and my own favorite, Les Miserables. And my favorite of his quotes, "All the forces in the world are not so powerful as an idea whose time has come."

My favorite historical figure is Herb Brooks, head coach of the USA Hockey Team that took gold at the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympic games. He defied popular coaching styles and led a far less talented group of college boys to a miracle that captivated all of America. Having beaten the USSR, the best team by far in the last two decades, US citizens experienced a national pride not felt since the start of the Cold War. Herb, arguably the greatest hockey coach of all time, gave Americans the chance to witness a miracle and experience a victory of such proportions americans most likely won't see again. My favorite quote from Herb Brooks is "Great moments are born from great opportunities."

My favorite historical figure is the great Benjamin Franklin. Known primarily for his work in Philadelphia, Franklin helped improve many fields. He helped establish the first fire station in Philadelphia, invented bifocals, and who can forget his famous kite experiment?! I've tossed a coin for good luck on his burial site and am fascinated by all that one man could do in his life. My favorite quote by Benjamin Franklin is "A small leak can sink a great ship."

Spencer R. Period 7 (Leonardo Da Vinci)
Leonardo is my favorite historical figure because of his mastery in multiple subjects. He is considered one of the greatest painters, inventors, engineers, and scientists. Along with being an expert in these fields, he also studied botany, geology, architecture, anatomy, music, and math. Da Vinci was advanced in thinking up inventions and innovations that were ahead of his time. I respect Leonardo Da Vinci for being a logical dreamer, which may seem like an oxymoron; however he kept the world in a logical view, but never stopped dreaming up new inventions. He was well-rounded in his knowledge, and had a respect for both the science and the arts. My favorite quote of his is, “Time stays long enough for anyone who will use it.”

Napoleon Bonaparte is my favorite historical figure because of his military dominance and political genius. He was the Emperor of the French Empire, twice, as well as conquering most of Europe. One of my favorite quote of his:"A revolution is an idea which has found its bayonets."

Brian M Period 7 (Franklin Roosevelt)
My favorite historical person is Franklin Roosevelt. That is because he helped America emerge victorious from various challenges: two of those being the Great Depression and World War II. He held his presidency for four terms, longer than any other president. He is and always be in the disscusion for greatest American president. My favorite quote said by him is "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."

My favorite historical figure would have to be Charles Darwin. Though he died in 1882 (and was born on the same day as Abe Lincoln, my second favorite historical figure) his study and research has had lasting effect on the world, and remains significant to even my twenty-first century generation.
Darwin's journey as a biologist on the H.M.S. Beagle led to the realization of evolution. Because of his findings, we can now (better) understand the nature of beings, what we are descended from, and how natural selection takes its course. Though Darwin's views have often been pronounced as heretical and banned from teaching in schools, his research has lately become undeniable, and transgressed from theory to fact.
“I was a young man with uninformed ideas. I threw out queries, suggestions, wondering all the time over everything; and to my astonishment the ideas took like wildfire.”
I think its worth admiring a man who brought such a store of knowledge into our world.

My favorite historical figure is Abraham Lincoln. This is partly due to the fact that he shares the same birthday as me, but mostly because through hard work and determination Lincoln was able to rise from his small log cabin in Kentucky and become the sixteenth president of the United States. In my eyes that's a pretty great accomplishment. Lincoln also gave one of the most famous speeches in U.S. history; the Gettsyburg Address. My favorite quote from Lincoln is “My great concern is not whether you have failed, but whether you are content with your failure.”

Trevor L. Period 8 (Adolf Hitler)
Hitler is my favorite historical figure because of his involvement in one of the most prolific wars in the history of the world. I am not saying that I agree with or admire his actions, but I am extremely fascinated with his whole persona. I love to learn about anything that has to do with Hitler and the German Nazis. My favorite quote of his is, "Success is the sole earthly judge of right and wrong."

My favorite historical person would have to be Ann Frank for many differet reasons. Anne Frank was a very young girl, but she still made a huge impact on the world and she continues to influence us all. The main reason that Anne Frank is my favorite historical figures to this day is because she was so young, yet so strong. She stood up for herself and encouraged many other people to stay strong. Ane knew that she would not make it through this, but she kept a diary that many people still read and it encourages us all to be optimistic even when times get rough. Anne Frank had every reason to hate various nazi's, but she continued to forgive and see the best in people. Anne Frank once said, "Despite everything, I believe that people are really good at heart."

My favorite historical figure is Susan B. Anthony. Susan served in the American Anti-Slavery Society. However, she is most well known for her work in the National Women Suffrage Association. She was one of the founders of this organization, and through it she was able to gain rights for women. She convinced many women to become independent, important members of society. Because of Susan's efforts, the 19th amendment was created, which states that every citizen has a right to vote. Susan truly helped to eliminate discrimination in America. My favorite quote of Susan's is, "I declare to you that women must not depend upon the protection of man, but must be taught to protect herself, and there I take my stand."

Winston Churchill
He stood up to Adolf Hitler, who many beleive was the most evil man of the 20th century, and ralied Great Britain to stand and I beleive saved the war for the Allies.
"All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope."

Clara Barton. She is one of my favorite historical figures beacause I admire her bravery and her compassionate heart. Although she was extremely shy as a child, she went on to start the Red Cross organization, even though she had no medical education prior to the Civil War. She overcame her fears for the sake of others, aiding the wounded on the front lines of battle, becoming the first woman to do so. She also began a program to reunite missing soldiers with their families, as well as starting a school near her hometown. "The surest test of dicipline is the absence of it."

I'd say my favorite historical figure would be Joseph Stalin, for his work in the field of super-creature and psychological warfare when he tried to create an army of half-man half-ape soldiers during the second World War and the alleged experimentation on the human mind he and the fascist Nazi party of German worked on. I also can respect his view on the world and how life works, due to my favorite Stalin quote, "I believe in one thing only, the power of human will." I think that the mind is the only thing that matters when it comes to facing adversity of any sort.

My favorite historical figure may be cliche but it is Martin Luther King, Jr. because he stood up for all African Americans and all other minorities. He was active in the Civil Rights Movement, and will forever be remembered for his "I Have a Dream" speech. The greatest thing about Martin was he wanted to solve the problem of prejudice with no violence, and just peace. My favorite quote of his is "Faith is taking the first step, even when you don't see the whole staircase."

Theodore Roosevelt is my favorite historical person becuase he was a man that lived everyday to the fullest and created some of America's greatest natural parks. "Teddy" was known very well as a compulsive hunter and nature enthusiast. I myself love to be outdoors and share his hardworking attitude. My all time favorite quote by him is "Speak softly and carry a big stick" meaning let yor actions talk for you and not your words.

My favorite historical figure is John F. Kennedy. He is my favorite historical figure because of the way he handled the Cuban missile crisis, and the way he pushed for America to be the first to the moon. He is also my favorite historical figure because of his service to our country. My Favorite quote from him is "Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future."

Jim Lovell-
My favorite historical figure is Jim Lovell, a famous NASA astronaut. He was best known from the Apollo moon missions, as well as for the Gemini missions. Lovell was the main pilot in the almost tragic Apollo 13 trip that was supposed to travel to the moon. After an explosion in their spacecraft, the astronauts had their lives on the line when forced to make an emergency trip to get home safely. Although Lovell never made it to the moon, he had a very successful career. He has the record for most accumulated time in space. My favorite quote from Lovell is, "There are people who make things happen, there are people who watch things happen, and there are people who wonder what happened. To be successful, you need to be a person who makes things happen." As an astronaut, Lovell needed to make things happen.

Helen Keller is my favorite person in history because of all that she overcame. She was both blind and deaf, she not only learned how to talk, she learned how to communicate. She also earned a degree, and was a political activist. I think that she was truly amazing for persevering through the worst. If it wasn't for her determination, she would not be a role model to millions of people today. My favorite quote of Keller's is, "The marvelous richness of human experience would lose something of rewarding joy if there were no limitations to overcome. The hilltop hour would not be half so wonderful if there were no dark valleys to traverse."

My favorite historical figure is Ralph Waldo Emerson because he led the Transcendentalist movement in the mid 19th century. He persuaded people to adopt a whole new way of thinking and living. I really respect him for saying no to modern culture and just living for the love of life. However there was also his civil disobedient side that wouldn't stand for injustice, no matter how small. His works are hugely inspirational and continue to influence writers today. My favorite quote is the well-known, " Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail."

My favorite historical figure is John Marshall because he was the one who established the supreme court as one of the three major branches of the federal government equal to executive and legislative. He also helped establish judicial review which gives the supreme court the right to reject laws which are in violation of the constitution. He served thirty years as the chief justice. My favorite quote is "To listen well is as powerful a means of communication and influence as to talk well”

My favorite historical figure is Harry Truman. This is because he helped America get over World War II. He improved foreign policies and created the Truman Doctrine. He also put the MArshall plan into effect. His main goal was to improve America and help other parts of the world after the disastrous second World War. My favorite quote by him is "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen."

My favorite historical figure is Jimi Hendrix. He is my favorite figure because his experimental methods of rock and roll were revolutionary. He has written songs that will stand the test of time. He is also regarded as the greatest guitarist that ever lived. My favorite quote of his is "Alright, if all the hippies cut off all their hair, I don't care, I don't care. Dig, 'cos I got my own world to live through
And I ain't gonna copy you."

John Lennon is my favorite historical figure. He was a member of the BEST band ever to live (aka The Beatles)and formed one of the most successful songwriting partnerships with Paul McCartney. I don't know what I would do without The Beatles' amazing music. Their songs brighten my day. John Lennon was also a peace activist and I believe if he hadn't have been tragically murdered, he would have gone on to continue helping the world become a more peaceful place. "All you need is love."

My favorite historical figure is Elizabeth Blackwell. She was the first woman to ever be accepted into medical school in America. After her, many other women felt comfortable to apply to medical school. She gave other females hope and new oppurtunities. I look up to Blackwell because being the first woman in an all mens school, especially of medicine would be highly frightening. I hope I can start some kind of revolution and be as succesful with medicine as she was. My favorite quotation of hers is, "If society will not admit of woman's free development, then society must be remodeled."

Anna Pavlova
My favorite historical figure is Anna Pavlova. She is known as one of the best prima ballerina’s of the twenty century. She inspires me in everything I do. I am an avid dancer and I admire how despite her hard upbringing she decided against all odds to follow her dreams. Not only was she one of the most beautiful Russian dancers the world had ever seen, but she traveled the world keeping the art of ballet alive. During her life, contemporary dance was taking off and people were forgetting how to perform the classics. However, Anna believed in preserving them and did her best to keep classical ballet alive. I admire her for not only her talent, but her persistence to be the best she could against all odds. “Success depends in a very large measure upon individual initiative and exertion, and cannot be achieved except by a dint of hard work.”

My favorite historical figure is Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He is known by India as "The Father of the Nation" because of his great intelligence and bravery. He resisted tyranny in his government by demonstrating social disobedience, which helped give India independence. He helped lead peaceful protests by those being abused by the government, and helped give these groups rights. Gandhi also had significant roles in the women's rights movement, promoting racial and social equality, and an overall movement towards peace. My favorite quote by him is "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind."

Alexander the Great
I consider him to be my favorite historical character of all time because of his brilliant military abilities. Including but not limited to his immediate suppression of the Greek city states followed by his defeat of the Persian Empire and creation of the largest empire in the world by that time. His management, leadership, and tactical abilities make him a person I greatly admire. Which is why he is my favorite historical person of all time. My favorite quote by him is "Heaven cannot brook two suns, nor earth two masters."

My favorite historical figure is Julius Ceaser, the man who really created the Roman Empire. Julius was able to unite a restless and vulnerable Rome and have them rally behind him. Ceaser had done many great things for the people of Rome, and also was not afraid of adversity on his way to success. My favorite quote by him is "Cowards die many times before their actual deaths."
