Option C -- The Equal Rights Amendment

The Equal Rights Amendment was passed by Congress in 1972 but never ratified by the required 38 states (only 35 states voted for it by the time the deadline for ratification passed in 1982). It was reintroduced in the House of Representatives on July 21, 2009 (but went nowhere). The amendment said, in its entirety, the following:
Section 1. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.
Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.
Section 3. This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification.
a. Do we need an Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution? Explain.
b. Provide ONE specific factual statistic to support your answer to (a).

c. Include the proper citation (web address is okay) of the source of your statistic in (a).
d. MAKE SURE YOUR STATISTIC is UNIQUE...NO TWO STUDENTS MAY HAVE THE SAME STAT...FIRST IN WINS!
e. Most Importantly . . . put your first name, last initial, and class period on your comment so you get credit!

The USA needs an Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution. The issue lies in the general stigma surrounding gender roles in a nation that has heavy religious influences. As women started to join the workplace, listings began showing up for both men and women. However, these listings were separate based on gender and many women found that they would have to work the same jobs as men for less pay. This period lasted until 1963 with the passing of the Equal Pay Act. Typical gender roles of the 20th century meant that women got the short end of the stick in most cases. Unfortunately, it appears that inequalities based upon gender still exist. Because of this, I believe that an Equal Rights Amendment needs to come to stop sexism that is still very relevant in America.

I believe that the United States definately needs this Equal Rights Amendment. Racism and sexism are still in existence in the world today and having this will help people in the job market. According to one of the latest censuses, womeon only make 77 cents to the male dollar, showing the unbalance of women's earnings compared to men.

A. The US needs an Equal Rights Amendment. Women in the workplace still experience more difficulty moving up to higher positions even when they have the same level of education.

B. A 2008 Catalyst survey of more than 4,000 full-time-employed men and women—high potentials who graduated from top MBA programs from 1996 to 2007—shows that the women are paid $4,600 less in their first post-MBA jobs, occupy lower-level management positions, and have significantly less career satisfaction than their male counterparts with the same education.
